Chapter at a glance

During Pentecost (Shavuot), the gathered disciples are filled with the Holy Spirit. Visitors in Jerusalem hear them declaring God's mighty deeds in their own languages; some are amazed, while others mock. Peter explains the event by citing the prophet Joel and then proclaims Jesus' death, resurrection, and exaltation, drawing on the Psalms. His hearers are deeply affected and ask what they should do. Peter calls them to repent and be immersed in the name of Jesus the Messiah, speaking of forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit. About three thousand respond. The chapter closes with believers devoted to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking bread, prayer, generosity, and care for those in need.

Read the chapter

Read Acts 2 completely in your Bible. Notice the movement from what God does to what the witnesses say, how Peter uses Scripture to explain it, how the hearers respond, and how the community lives afterward. Observe that Peter speaks about Jesus' bodily resurrection, not merely the survival of His teaching. Ask what the text explicitly states before drawing conclusions about the timing of every event described in Joel.

Key Scripture connections

Respond to the Word

The Spirit's work leads to truthful witness about Jesus, a call to repentance, and an identifiable pattern of shared life. Consider whether your words point people toward Jesus and whether your conduct shows love to neighbors and practical care for believers in need. We cannot reproduce Pentecost by a technique; we can obey the clear call to repent, follow Jesus, pray, learn Scripture, and love one another.

Prayer for this chapter

Father, thank You for pouring out Your Spirit and for raising and exalting Jesus the Messiah. Give me ears to hear Your Word in its context and a heart willing to repent where I have resisted You. Keep my witness truthful, humble, and centered on Jesus rather than on myself. Teach me to pray faithfully, welcome instruction, and remain devoted to fellowship. Open my eyes to people whose burdens I can help carry. Let generosity be sincere, not performed for recognition. Shape my words and actions so that they bear fruit in love, patience, and faithfulness. Amen.
